Are you toying with the idea of writing and publishing a book yourself? Perhaps you already have an idea for the content or the story, the genre and/or the cover?

Writing a book is a life goal for many people, but it usually fails at the very beginning due to initial hurdles and stumbling blocks, or the project gets so bogged down during the process that it doesn’t come to a successful conclusion after all.

Do you feel the same way? Do you harbour the dream of writing your own book? Have you perhaps already written a few texts or imagined what it would be like to finally hold the book in your hands?

Writing a book involves different skills that the author should have or develop during the course of the project.

Skills required or to be developed

Writing a book, like many longer-term projects, involves three different areas of expertise:

Self-competence
First of all, the person needs a rough or, if possible, precise idea of the project. It is helpful to clarify for yourself personally what the incentive and motivation is to write a book. Because it is precisely the ‘why’ that helps you to stick with it in difficult moments.

Social competence
What does he/she want to achieve with the book publication? Who should be addressed – with what content and with what objective?

Expertise
A common thread and an idea for the structure, layout, illustration, etc. are needed and, finally, knowledge of target group orientation and marketing is helpful when writing. Of course, the type of writing, the flow of reading, the grammar and sentence structure as well as the personal style of writing are also important. When should the book be published? In what size and format should the book be published? With which publisher?

When publishing a book, there are countless questions that need to be answered during the process.

Therefore, the implementation process needs structure for a step-by-step approach as well as functioning strategies that help you to really stick with it and then successfully implement the book step by step from the idea to the actual end product.

If you have enough resources or support, important areas and competences can easily be brought in and/or purchased.

For my part, I have always greatly appreciated the complexity of the skills required and the tasks involved in my book projects, because I was challenged on different levels and it was therefore all the more rewarding to hold the successful end product in my hands at the end.

Writing a book is also a very creative process that can be stimulating and a lot of fun!
